Take note retailers, search engine supreme Google have launched Google Shopping in Australia. The retail-shopping site allows online retailers to advertise their products on-line, enabling shoppers to search for products, compare prices and read reviews. This new function will be accessible on the Google search page.

This new launch is great news for the Australian retail industry. That said it is another indication of how shoppers are resorting to the internet as a means of researching and purchasing products.

This new development may well be a further warning to those brick and mortar retailers whom still lack a digital presence that they are going to get left behind if they don’t venture into the online retail space.

So what is Google Shopping?

When searching for a product, users will now be able to click on a shopping tab, similar to the Google maps, and Google news tabs.  Once doing so, users will be confronted with a page of results featuring; product information, prices and retailers that sell the product.

As it stands there are some exceptions to which product types can be displayed. Currently event tickets, cars, services and products bundled with plans such as mobile phones are not available.

Retailers can sign up to have their products showcased on Google Shopping at no cost by simply submitting a catalogue of their products.

It is becoming imperative for Australian retailers to have a significant online presence or else they run the risk of losing business to offshore competitors.
