Happy Birthday to .ORG!

It was the year that U.S. President Ronald Reagan was sworn in for a second term in office, that Coca-Cola Co regrettably changed its formula and that Microsoft Corporation released the first version of Windows, but it was also the year of the very first .ORG domain; mitre.org.

The .ORG gTLD is actually older than the World Wide Web itself. With over 10.5 million registrants in the last 30 years, it continues to provide an online presence for the organisations and individuals who contribute to the greater good.

Brian Cute, CEO of Public Interest Registry, said that “From encouraging philanthropy and volunteerism to preserving natural and cultural heritage, fostering economic growth and much more, causes that live on .org bring incalculable benefits to our communities, our society and our shared planet. We look forward to many more years of giving organisations of all kinds a trusted online home for building communities and working towards a common cause.”

There are an estimated 3 billion people online today, and the internet has given us to power to easily access information and make it available to a wide audience. For example, unicef.org was first registered in 1993 and has since provided long-term humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing countries.

The domain’s non-profit operator, Public Interest Registry, is celebrating the 30th birthday with www.happy30th.org (hyper link this), an interactive website dedicated to the history of the .ORG tld.

Some of the earliest and best known registrations:

mitre.org – 10th July 1985
wwf.org – 30th January 1992
change.org – 18th January 1995
redcross.org – 5th September 1995
peta.org – 26th September 1995
